He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not...

They say that love is a wonderful thing. They are right, God is love and He is most always up to something wonderful. He is doing something wonderful for a good friend of mine, she shared the news with me yesterday. I am happy for her, she has given up much for Him and been content with simply His presence in return. Oh how He must love her, and delight as He sends her a little blessing even this side of Heaven.

I on the other hand, am not so resignedly content. I bring my all to the altar (as all Christians are instructed to do) but I admit I have a hard time leaving it there. I have hopes and plans for my life that I am more comfortable holding to than letting go; handing them over is like being asked to give up my favorite blanket. When God asks me to give Him my hopes, my plans, my dreams…..and He does not immediately give them back or give me insight into His greater plans, I start plucking daisy leaves. “He Loves Me”, “He Loves Me Not”, “He Loves Me”, “He Loves Me Not”. Will He, or will He not grant the dreams I must trust Him for? When I get tired of going through daisy leaves I start going through the scriptures.

The Bible contains the truth, and the truth is after all, the best place to go for an answer when you are asking a question. It turns out, He does love me. I know He loves me, not because of what He may send my way this side of Heaven, but because of what He has already sent me this side of Heaven (His only Son). He loves me, not because I have a perfect heart, but because He has chosen to share His perfect love with those who are less than perfect. Because I know God loves me, I know God is doing something wonderful for me too.

Some days I see it clearly, other days it is a little hazy. How I pray for the grace to trust His love on those hazy days. Abraham and Sarah did, Joseph did, David did, and I can too; He loves me.

“I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.” Jeremiah 31:3 (ESV)
