A day to remember those who died in the name of freedom. Is it even possible to fully appreciate the giving of another’s life for the liberties we are so accustomed to we do not even realize they are freedoms? One day a year seems kind of insufficient for contemplation. Then there are the others that Memorial Day brings to mind, those we have known and loved, whose lives have also been lost. A visit to the Cemetery seems equally insufficient to contemplate their impact on our lives. It is hard to think about the hardships of war, about the lives that were lost, about the families that were torn apart as a result, about our own hearts breaking as we have said goodbye to those who were so dear to us. And yet, it is good to remember.
It is good to remember that a price was paid for the freedoms we experience. It is good to remember that although many soldiers lost their lives, ultimately freedom was not lost. It is good to remember that though we have lost those near and dear to us, we will never lose the love and the inspiration they are. These memories, these freedoms, bring us joy…though not without first touching the tearful parts of these stories. It is not always easy to remember, but no one ever promised the good way would be the easy way.
This Memorial day way we choose to remember, and in choosing the good, find more of the same..
