Changes Like The Wind

I have gone from checking the weather app to checking the number of Coronavirus cases in my area of the world. I realize that checking either does not change things, but it does help me prepare for the day. Should I wear a raincoat when I get the mail? Should I wear a face mask when I go to pick up the dry cleaning? Those predicting the course of the Coronavirus get no more thanks than the average meteorologists do. We rarely notice when they get it right, we are quick to criticize when they miscalculate. We look to them because we have a hard time with daily living. We want to plan for tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, and the day after that day too. We blame them, that even with science’s greatest advances, life is still unpredictable. Plan less. Pray More. Plan less. Stay more. Stay in the moment you are in, which you wanted to get to yesterday, but are missing today because in it, you are wondering about tomorrow. I am not saying we should not plan, I am saying we should plan less. Less possessively. Less selfishly. Less self-assuredly. And when we plan, we should hold our plans loosely, which is easier to do when we remember that His grasp on us is anything but loose. We cling, unfortunately we often cling to the wrong things. What is not meant to slip through our fingers, never will, and we can trust Him in the letting go of what was never meant to last forever. It will not be easy, but it will be possible. Possible to cling to that which we were meant to cling to, His love, His hope, His promises, His salvation. Possible to let go of our own ideas and plans and even shattered dreams, whose fragments He may still use in a masterpiece. Some things, like the weather and the current number of Coronavirus cases, change daily. As we track these things, let us not forget to track more important and unchanging things, like the promises of God. Perhaps it will remind us to enter the day clothed in grace and truth.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. -Hebrews 13:8
