Small Talk

I am not that good at small talk. I can appear to be interested for a while, but sooner or later I change the subject or tune out. Life is short, too short to spend time on things I do not enjoy or see purpose in. I do not like to waste my earthly moments on things that do not matter much now and certainly will not matter in eternity. Or do I?
While I do not like small talk with other mortals, I fear I do not mind engaging in a little small talk with God. While He is busy orchestrating the salvation story of countless many, I come to Him in prayer concerned about my knee sprain, what my boss’s boss will think of my work, and the possible dangers of non-organic soap and how that fits into my budget.
I talk to God about little things, because He cares...about me. Still, I wonder if to Him, most of what weighs on my mind...is small talk in light of the lasting glories of Eternity. I doubt that He “tunes out” when I start in with my small talk, He is loving, kind, and patient, oh so patient. Perhaps however, I would walk away from our communion feeling richer and fuller if I let Him change the subject, to things a little more meaningful, eternal, glory-filled. Here is to talking to Him with
“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?”
Psalm 8:3,4 (ESV)
