The Modern Proverbs 31 Woman

There is the  one who...DOES IT ALL- She balances her career and family well, not to mention her checkbook.  Her house and children look as if they came off the cover of a magazine, not to mention herself.  She follows the latest health trends and leads bible studies.

There is the one who...KNOWS IT ALL- She is an authority on everything from child rearing to home schooling to bug proofing your home.  She writes books on nutrition (and follows her own menus), and can toilet train a cat in 20 minutes.

There is the one who...HAS IT ALL - She is a natural athlete, a singer, and what she plants...grows.  Her kids were born with obedient hearts, and her husband reads her mind.

There is the one who...CREATES IT ALL - She makes homemade cinnamon rolls, plans all inclusive yet not exhausting vacations, and has never met a problem because she only sees opportunity.

Then there is me, stuck somewhere between the gluten-free movement and the quest for homemade rolls that do not involve proofing yeast.  I am hoping if you Google “quick, gluten free, tasty cinnamon rolls made with easy-to-grow-your-own oats”, you find…..“ME”’, but chances are you won’t.

That is okay.  I do not have to do it all, know it all, have it all, or create it all.  Neither do you.

God creates it all. He alone is I AM THAT I AM.  He alone is All-Knowing and All-Powerful.

I am not called to balance my neighbor’s life, just mine.  I am not called to figure out life, but to trust the One who has it all figured out.  I am not called to have it all, but to faithfully steward what I have been given and to heed the commandment which tells me not to covet what my neighbor has.  I am not called to create, but to be a part of...God’s story.

Proverbs 31 is not a script, it is a description of what can happen in a woman’s life when God is allowed to work.   It is an invitation, not to do, but to know.  To know God, in a reverent, submissive, loving and worshipful way.

You won’t find much about that on Google.  But then again, if you really want to live the life you were created for, maybe Google is not the place to find it.  Maybe memorizing Proverbs 31 is not the solution either.  Perhaps instead of pursuing “life”, we should try pursuing the Life Giver, and be awed by the life He gives.
