The Mint Meltaway That Does Not Melt Away

It is Christmas time, and while we need a mint meltaway that does not melt away every day, we particularly need it at Christmas. Christmas is full of promise for most of us. We dream about a year, even if not this year, when there really is peace amongst those we love, if not for the whole world. A year where we get just what we were hoping for, in life and under the Christmas tree. A year when the good cheer does not end.

Sometimes Christmas time delivers what we were hoping for, at least in part. We savor those moments. We savor the health and the peace and the happiness we feel being with those we love. The good moments in life should be savored, they are gifts from above. We should savor them as we would perfect bonbons or mint meltaways, twirling them on our tongues with delight until at last it is gone. But sooner or later, the blissful moments end, and we are reminded that we live in a fallen world. For some the blissful moments end sooner rather than later. For some, they never ever were. Only Heaven knows why God in His goodness allows the bad that He does, just as only Heaven knows why in His goodness He yet extends His mercy and grace to a fallen people. Nonetheless, the time comes and the mint meltaway, melts away.

There is a mint meltaway that never melts away. There is a hope that is never going to disappoint. There is something worth savoring that can be savored forever, right on into eternity. That something is the love of God, which we can know and savor, because He wrapped Himself in flesh that first Christmas long ago, and placed himself not under your tree, but just outside of the door to your heart. If you have let Him in, or if you will let Him in, you will know the sweetness that He offers. Savor it, like you would a mint meltaway, twirl His love for you ‘round and ‘round in your heart until it’s hard to separate your longing from your delight. And then relax, because it really is there to stay, it really will, not melt away.

Christmas time comes and goes, as do our joys and our sorrows, our delights and our pain. Through it all, God offers us a peace and a promise of joy for eternity in Jesus Christ His Son. Savor the mint meltaway that does not melt away.

"Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you.” Psalm 63:3 (ESV)
