Space For Silence

There is a space for silence where the words get in the way

Where thoughts cannot be formed to capture what the heart would say

A place where sorrow overwhelms, a place where tears run dry

And where there are no answers for the simple question “Why?’

There is a space of emptiness, the earthly cannot fill

A longing to be privy to the workings of God’s will

A heartache for the answers to our suffering and pain

A hope that there are reasons for what man cannot explain

The hardest thing to do at times is choose to simply be

In that space of silence, where so much we cannot see

To trust that in the rubble we will find God has not moved

To wrestle with our doubts until His love again is proved

His ways cannot be known in full, by mere mortal man

From eternity to eternity, His love and power span

Though darkness hides His light at times, He loves us with His best

No height, no depth, can keep us from His Sovereign place of rest

In every high and every low he holds us in his hand

He dries our tears and calms the fears we cannot understand

And when He comes again to right all wrongs and ever reign

The glorious joy He brings will swallow up our deepest pain

“Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me.  By day the LORD commands his steadfast love, and at night his song is with me, a prayer to the God of my life.”  Psalm 42:7-8 (ESV)
